Daily Bites and The Great Carb Debate


Today’s food choices, from upper left: I ate most of the rest of the omelet I ate yesterday for brunch, plus 3 pieces of potato; a sample of green chile chicken Frito pie at the grocery store (YUM); Trader Joe’s dark chocolate nibs (I ate 6 pieces; this is a great way to get a chocolate fix for 8 calories!); multivitamin and calcium supplements x2; glass of Isopure Zero Carb; deli sliced house-roasted roast beef and Tillamook sharp cheddar cheese cubes; green chile chicken casserole.

This weekend was a pretty busy one in my household.  Lots of planning, cleaning, shopping and cooking for the week got done.  While I was menu planning for myself this week–hubby is on soft foods, so ground beef, egg whites with cheese, applesauce and protein shakes are the order of the day for him for the next few weeks–I started to think about the nutrient balance I’m getting daily.

Product Review: Syntrax Matrix 5.0 Mint Cookie

I am not one who likes sameness in the things I eat.  What I mean by that is that I get really, really tired of eating the same thing over and over again.  My husband and I differ drastically here–he could eat the exact same thing every day and never tire of it.  I, on the other hand, crave variety and difference in what I eat.

So in preparation for 3 weeks of a full liquid diet, I had only chosen 2 sources of protein that I liked and could tolerate–Isopure Zero Carb and Unjury Chocolate Splendor.  I was afraid that I would tire quickly of these so I needed to hunt down another source of protein that would taste good and that met my nutritional requirements:  at least 20 grams of protein, fewer than 10 grams carbs with no more than 5 of those being from sugars, and have less than 200 calories.  I’d heard good things about Syntrax Matrix Mint Cookie (“it tastes like Thin Mints” was a common thing I’d heard) and decided to give it a try.

Pre-Op Diet: Progress Report

Today marks Day 3 of my pre-op diet, and I have to say, it’s actually going better than I ever expected. I have been stomach-growling hungry only twice so far, and had a wicked headache yesterday.  I think that was partially due to the fact that I didn’t eat breakfast–I couldn’t, because I had an upper GI series scheduled for yesterday morning–and carb withdrawal.  While my surgeon’s plan allows me to consume 1200 calories and 120 grams of carbohydrate, I’m trying to keep my carbs below 100 grams.  I wasn’t given a specific protein goal to hit, but I’m trying to get between 80 and 100 grams of protein daily as this is my post-op goal.  I have also managed to keep my fat grams below 40 each day.  And of course, I’m drinking water like crazy.  So far, the result has been that I’m down 9 pounds (!) and my shorts are fitting a bit more loosely (I need a belt!).

Of course, this is only Day 3 of 19.  Ask me how things are going at this time next week!
