This week saw a slight gain.  Am I disappointed?  Slightly.  Am I discouraged?  Not a bit.  Let me explain.

Christmas Eve: I Passed! But I Failed!

If you’ve seen the 1985 film “Real Genius,” perhaps you remember this exchange.  Let me give you the context for it.  In the film, Chris (Val Kilmer) has been vexed by a problem he’s encountered while building a laser for one of his professors.  He has just thrown a fit in the dorm’s kitchen when he has a revelation about how to solve his problem.  This epiphany causes him to celebrate, dancing and shouting, and in the midst of his celebration, he runs into his friend Lazlo (Jon Gries).

Lazlo Hollyfeld:  Well, how’d you do?

Chris Knight: How’d I do?  I passed!  But I failed! Yeah!

Lazlo Hollyfeld:  Well, then I’m happy and sad for you.

That’s how I feel about yesterday’s eating.  I passed, but I failed.

Let me explain.

Updating Holiday Traditions: Mindful Gifting

You were probably expecting a post about mindful eating because I said I was going to write about that today.  Well…

I was going to write about mindful eating today, but after a particularly soul-wrenching therapy session today, I decided against it.  And I don’t mean soul-wrenching in a bad way; I was given an awful lot to think about and ruminate on, some of which I’ll write about eventually.  So if you were expecting my insights on mindful eating, I apologize and will write about that later on this week.  Promise.

What I will share with you is something my husband and I did today that has become a holiday tradition for us.

Post-Op Week 24 Progress Report and Holiday Week Plan of Attack

This week’s date with the scale ended really, really well. In fact, it was much better than I expected.

I had not expected to lose quite as much as I did, but I will definitely take a 7.2 pound loss any week, especially during the holidays!  I was expecting maybe 2 or 3 pounds, but not 7!

I’d say I navigated Week One of Holiday Eating Hell pretty successfully. As we go into Week Two of said eating hell, I’ve got a game plan in place to make sure I’m just as successful come next Sunday. I’m closing in on 100 pounds gone since day of surgery. I’m really hoping I hit it before my 6-month appointment on the 2nd. That would be an awesome way to begin the New Year.

Catching Up: Daily Bites and Navigating Holiday Eating Hell

I’ve been absent from this space for more than usual this week, but as I posted yesterday, work got in the way of life.  And now…I can breathe again.  At least until January 6, when we start spring semester.

I knew going into this final week of the semester, things at work would be challenging, food-wise.  Why? you might ask yourself.

Have you ever been on a high school (or any school, for that matter) campus during the month of December?

Post-Op Week 22 Progress Report and the Holiday Gauntlet

Good healthy loss of 2 pounds this week.  Today marks exactly 5 months since surgery, and I’m super pleased with my progress so far.  I don’t think that I’ll be one of those folks that makes it to my goal in less than a year, but I’m okay with that.  I don’t care how long it takes me to get there so long as I get there.

In the past two months, I have lost roughly a third of my total…that blows my mind! 40 pounds down in 60 days…crazy, right?  But it shows you what a gastric sleeve and disciplined behaviors combined with support groups and therapy can do to improve one’s health.  One must also keep in mind that I started out much heavier than the average bear (close to 400 pounds with over 250 to lose), so if you are considering WLS and are what is considered a lightweight (100 pounds or less to lose), your weight loss may not be as dramatic.  Every body responds differently to weight loss surgery and the subsequent aftercare plan.  So as the diet companies’ commercials say, “results not typical.”

I am two pounds from my December goal which I hope to hit before Christmas break. I think it is possible, and am just going to keep on doing what I’ve been doing…I’ve been successful so far!   Then after that, it will be time to set a new weight loss goal.

Winter has always been a challenging time of year for me, whether or not I am in weight loss mode.

Holiday Goals and Meals, Not Seasons

Tomorrow promises to be a fairly busy day, even though I am not really cooking for us.  This morning, we went out and bought what we will eat tomorrow for our Thanksgiving meals from the chef’s case at the grocery store to avoid leftovers and to avoid eating at someone else’s home.

Something someone on the OH VSG forum posted this morning, “Thanksgiving is a meal, not a season” has been rolling around in my head all day today.  How I view special events that revolve around food has changed, and this shift in thinking has influenced how I view eating on days deemed special occasions, like Thanksgiving.

I am planning to treat tomorrow as a one day event, not an excuse to eat whatever, whenever.  It’s how all of us should treat the holidays with regard to eating.  They should be singular events that do not give us free rein to eat just anything in any quantity for an extended period of time with the hollow promise that “oh, I’ll get back on track at New Year’s.”  Because you and I both know that never happens.
