Not terribly pleased with the scale this week, but it’s all my own doing.  And it needs to stop.

The Price of Obesity: Orthopedic Issues

Is this:

image

This is an x-ray of my knees taken today at my orthopedic surgeon’s office.   I went in today to have him look at my right knee, which I hurt last week and which was keeping me from walking and working out properly.

When the doctor finally came in to see me, after our initial pleasantries, his words to me were:

Your left knee actually looks worse on film.

Post-Op Week 57, Skinny Bitches and Dreaming the Impossible Dream…Weight

image

Down nearly a pound this week, but that’s the water retention from this past week subsiding.  I just want my belly not to stick out past my boobs, is that too much to ask??  I don’t care if I have the middle-aged lady pooch, I just don’t want to look like I have a beer gut!

I’m starting to think that my goal (170) might be unreachable, especially since I have been dancing around the same weight for the past month or so.  At this point, I will be glad to get down below 200 pounds to get to the vaunted “Onederland,” which is just 20 pounds away.  But losing that 20 pounds seems insurmountable.

Post-Op Week 55 Progress Report

I am pleased with this week’s progress.  It seems that taking the week off from the gym didn’t have as ill an effect as I thought it might.  I did try to eat under 1200 calories every day to make up for the fact that I simply wasn’t as active as usual.  I was in a knee brace until Friday, so I kept my activity to a minimum this week to let my knee recover from the sprain I sustained while running on Monday.  Continue reading

What Liberation Looks Like To Me Today

image

I’d made a to-do list for today, and at the top of it was giving my new running shoes a go at the gym.  That was moderately successful.  I tweaked my left knee and aggravated a decades-old knee injury, so there won’t be any running for me in the foreseeable future.

Second on that list was to call each of the credit card companies that I had accounts with for stores that sold plus-sized clothing so that I could close the accounts.  I sat and called each one, methodically, systematically, and with great cheer closed each account.

As I closed each one, I felt a weight being lifted from my shoulders.  It also felt a bit like slash-and-burn clear-cutting of a field.  And I suppose it sort of is, in a way:  I made way both literally and metaphorically for new clothing choices by shedding the keys to the stores that for so long were my only choice for clothing.

And now that I can wear an XL in misses clothing, the possibilities for me to look pretty freakin’ awesome are wide open.

Post-Op Week 54 Progress Report: Milestones and Digging Deep

image

This week’s progress was a surprise, as I was on the road again this week at a conference in Houston.  Travel tends to wreak havoc on my routine, and I sometimes don’t make the best choices with regard to eating and exercise despite plans to do so.

Post-Op Week 38 Progress Report

This week saw a slight uptick in the scale, but I’m not worried about it.  I ate a bit more salt yesterday than I normally do, and I also increased my carb intake this week to prep for yesterday’s race.  I’m pretty sure that the glycogen I stored is binding some of the water I’m holding on to.  Also, as one of my MFP friends pointed out, it’s possible that the workout I did yesterday caused my muscles to be holding on to some fluid as well.  Regardless of what it was that caused the slight gain, this week I’m cutting back to my usual 50 grams or less of carbs, and keeping my protein intake high as usual.
