Post-Op Week 11 Progress Report and Perspective, Part 2

postopweek11-092213I knew I would have a loss this week since last week I had a slight gain due to water retention.  I didn’t realize that the loss would be this huge, though!   I knew my fluid retention was flushed out, partially because my hormone levels calmed down near the end of the week and I felt less inclined to eat everything I saw in sight, I drank water like it was my job (well, it kind of is, I guess…) and I peed some pretty epic pees.

Hey, I keep it real around here.

Anyway, I now weigh about what I weighed my junior year of college, which was 20 years ago.  It is trippy to think about.  Also trippy is an NSV that I wasn’t expecting so soon.

Perspective

Tonight my husband and I had a couple of errands to run, and one of them was to make a stop at Dick’s Sporting Goods.  I’d been wanting to go up there to take pictures of myself next to weights that were equal to what weight I’d lost so far.  I’d done this the last time I’d made a serious effort to lose weight, and it was motivating and inspiring at the same time.  Any time I’d lost a significant amount of weight, I’d always had trouble conceptualizing what the weight I lost looked like.  Standing next to dumbbells helped me to see (and feel) what I’d previously been carrying around on my body.

Here I am with 75 pounds.  This represents the weight I’ve lost since June.

Pardon the monochrome look–it’s Friday, and we wear school colors on Fridays.  I had been wearing my new Mizunos all day, but took them off once I got home to let my feet breathe and rest a little.

Then I decided to take a picture with the amount of weight that I’ve lost since I was at my heaviest.  This one was an eye-opener.

Daily Bite, a Good Nutrition Day and HUNGER

The past couple of days I have been a beast when it comes to protein:  yesterday I got in 98 grams of protein; today I got in 102 grams.

But I have been So. Freaking. HUNGRY.  And I don’t get it.  I really don’t.

This is NOT head hunger.  This is not “I’m bored, OMGIWANNASTUFFMYFACE” hunger.  This is true, legit, physical hunger.  The kind that makes your stomach hurt.

Tired.

Here’s what I ate today:

Today’s food choices, from upper right: unsweet passion tea from Starbucks (I ask for Splenda instead of the syrup that sweetens it); mini lasagna with steamed broccoli (not shown); multivitamin x2; meatballs in marinara with mozzarella; cheesy barbecue turkey meatloaf mini with broccoli and cheese (not shown); ham and cheese rollup; one egg omelet with ham and cheese.

I have been run ragged this week, and it’s only Tuesday.  Tonight was my second late night as we had Open House at school tonight so I was at work for 12+ hours today…tomorrow doesn’t look to be a short day either, and neither does Thursday.  Interesting story:  I did bond with a parent of one of my students tonight over the sleeve–she had one done a year ago with the same doctor.

I will get some rest on Friday, I think.  I hope.  Saturday I have a workshop to attend, and Sunday I’ve agreed to tutor a former boss’ daughter in AP Bio.  I really need to learn to say no, don’t I?  Perhaps that’s a post for another time when I am not physically and mentally tired.

Bedtime calls, so off I go.

Protips for Social Eating and Daily Bites

Here’s what I ate today:

Today’s food choices, from upper right: multivitamin x2; cheesy barbecue turkey meatloaf mini with broccoli and cheese (not shown); Sargento reduced fat cheddar cheese stick; Boar’s Head maple glazed turkey slices; beef tenderloin from 3 little sandwiches (and a bite of the bread), cheddar cheese slices and grapes; one egg omelet with ham and cheese. Not shown: Trader Joe’s dark chocolate wedges with caramel (I ate 2 pieces, which is one serving).

Today was a stellar day in terms of protein and activity: I got in 91 grams of protein, all from food. No protein drinks needed!  According to Fitbit, I earned 640 calories of activity today from all the walking and standing I did at work and after work today, so I call that a win.

Because I am involved in a couple of organizations that have social functions that often involve food, I find myself attending many receptions and parties where appetizers are passed and where alcohol is served.  Tonight was no exception, as I attended a reception for my alma mater’s new President in the home of a fellow alumni couple, and there were appetizers and alcohol present.  How to navigate situations like this can be a challenge, but they don’t have to be.

I thought I’d share some of the strategies I’ve employed when finding myself in these situations so that if you are also a post-op, these might be useful to you.

Bonus Post: Daily Bites and Sunday Cooking

Here’s what I ate today:

Today’s food choices, from upper right: jambalaya bowl leftovers from Genghis Grill; cheesy barbecue turkey meatloaf minis; roast beef slices with a cheese stick; trenta sized unsweetened passion tea with Splenda from Starbucks; multivitamin x2.

I cooked up a storm today, as I’ve done every Sunday for the last month or so.  It’s become my new habit, and I enjoy spending time in the kitchen because for me, cooking is relaxing.  It is also one of the few creative outlets I have.  Not gonna lie, lesson planning is the other.  Sad, isn’t it?
